Aquaforest Air Scrubber 2.3L
Maintaining pH Stability in Your Aquarium
Reef aquariums are delicate ecosystems that thrive on stability. Daily fluctuations in carbon dioxide (CO2) from breathing, pets, and cooking can affect aquarium pH. Higher CO2 levels absorbed by a skimmer can acidify water, causing pH drops, unstable dKH, and reduced coral calcification. Over time, this may stress corals and even lead to coral loss. During the day, photosynthesis helps stabilize pH, but at night, oxygen demand increases and pH drops. This effect is more pronounced in autumn and winter when rooms are less ventilated. Using the Aquaforest AF Air Scrubber helps maintain a stable environment in these conditions.
The AF Air Scrubber reactor and CO2-absorbing media prevent harmful pH fluctuations when used correctly. Made from high-quality white and transparent acrylic, the reactor features a modern design suitable for placement either inside or outside a cabinet. It is easy to assemble and service while ensuring consistent airflow through the CO2 scrubbing media.
A notable feature is the base that holds the CO2 filter. It includes three cut-to-size sponges that should be kept moist with RO water to improve air scrubbing efficiency. If the sponges dry before the media needs replacing, simply remove the base, re-soak the sponges, and reassemble. Lab tests show this extends media lifespan, making it a cost-effective solution for reef aquariums.
Consistent Water Parameters and CO2 Reduction
The reactor is designed to pull CO2-rich air through the sponge layer at the bottom, channeling it through a grid to maximize CO2 removal before it reaches the skimmer or aquarium. The media is protected by dust-absorbing sponges at the top and bottom. The lid features a smart-twist closure for easy access, while a flap and seal ensure proper bottom-to-top airflow. Media is gradually used from bottom to top, with color changes indicating when replacement is needed. The outer lid includes a 10 mm (⅜”) hose connection for skimmer integration. Within a few days, the media’s effects become noticeable, with pH levels increasing as CO2 is absorbed.
Testing shows the AF Air Scrubber can raise pH by approximately 0.2–0.4 units and stabilize it within the range of 8.0–8.4. For optimal results, it is recommended to use the AF Air Scrubber together with the AF Air Scrubber Media cartridge.

Important Notes
The filter does not include a CO2-absorbing cartridge.
Water pH follows a daily rhythm, so measurements should be taken at the same time each day.
Used media left inside too long may change color again but will no longer remove CO2 effectively.
Wear gloves and ensure proper ventilation when replacing media.
AF Air Scrubber Media can be used in combination with Carbon.cN for enhanced performance.
